MARGHERITA COGO Born in Tione (Province of Trento) in 1951 and married with two daughters, Margherita Cogo taught humanities at middle school and graduated in Philosophy at the University of Padua. She began her political career in 1985 as a local government councillor in Tione, in the ranks of the Italian Socialist Party. In 1990 she was re-elected to the Council with a local civic alliance and in 1993 the centre-left majority elected her as Mayor. Two years later, in the first elections following the new law on the direct election of Mayors, the electors re-confirmed her position as Mayor, at the head of a centre-left coalition. In the same year 1995, she became President of the District Health Committee in her area, the Giudicarie Valleys, and in 1997 she joined the Executive Council of the Consortium of Trentino Communes, where she dealt in particular with culture and health. In 1998, with the Democrats of the left, she was elected as a member of the regional/provincial assembly and in 1999 she became the first woman to take on the role of President of the Trentino-Alto Adige Region, elected by a council majority made up of the centre-left/autonomists/Svp. In this role she dealt in particular with issues linked to the resolution of ethnic conflict and coexistence, in addition to the reform of the Statute of Autonomy, reaching the objective of seeing a modification to the Statute approved by the Italian Parliament, in association with the Region, a modification which will allow innovations in the majority system adopted for the election of the Provincial Assembly of Trento. In 2002 she resigned as President of the Region and returned to her seat in the assembly, concerning herself in particular with education, the welfare state, health and policy for equal opportunities between men and women. Re-elected, once again with the Democrats of the left, in the provincial/regional elections of autumn 2003 which took place in Trentino according to the new law for the direct election of the President of the Province, she was nominated Vice-President of the Province of Trento and Councillor for Culture. Her department deals with the safeguarding and conservation of the historic, artistic and popular heritage; local traditions and customs, academies, institutes and museums at provincial level and libraries: events and local artistic, cultural, artistic and educational activities; toponymy. MARGHERITA COGO Nata a Tione (provincia di Trento) nel 1951, sposata con due figlie, già insegnante di lettere nella scuola media inferiore, Margherita Cogo è laureata in Filosofia presso l'Università degli Studi di Padova. Esordisce in politica nel 1985 come consigliere comunale di Tione, nelle fila del Partito Socialista Italiano. Nel 1990 è rieletta in Consiglio con una lista civica locale e nel 1993 la maggioranza comunale di centrosinistra le elegge Sindaco. Due anni dopo, nelle prime consultazioni con la nuova legge sull'elezione diretta del Sindaco, gli elettori la confermano primo cittadino, alla guida di una coalizione di centrosinistra. Nello stesso anno, il 1995, assume la carica di Presidente del Comitato di Distretto sanitario della sua zona, le Valli Giudicarie, e nel 1997 entra nella Giunta esecutiva del Consorzio dei Comuni trentini, dove si occupa in particolare di cultura e sanità. Nel 1998, coi Democratici di Sinistra, risulta eletta consigliere regionale/provinciale e nel1999 è la prima donna ad assumere la carica di Presidente della Regione Trentino-Alto Adige, eletta da una maggioranza consiliare di centrosinistra/autonomisti/Svp. In tale veste si occupa in particolare dei temi legati alla soluzione dei conflitti etnici ed alla convivenza, nonché della riforma dello Statuto di autonomia, raggiungendo l'obiettivo di veder approvare dal Parlamento italiano, in raccordo con la Regione, una modifica allo Statuto che consentirà di innovare in senso maggioritario il sistema di elezione del Consiglio provinciale di Trento. Nel 2002 si dimette da Presidente della Regione tornando ad impegnarsi nei banchi del Consiglio, occupandosi in particolare di scuola, stato sociale, sanità, politiche per le pari opportunità tra uomo e donna. Rieletta, sempre coi Democratici di Sinistra, nelle consultazioni provinciali/regionali dell'autunno 2003, avvenute in Trentino con la nuova legge sull'elezione diretta del Presidente della Provincia, è nominata Vicepresidente della Provincia di Trento e Assessore alla cultura. Le competenze assegnate al suo assessorato sono la tutela e la conservazione del patrimonio storico, artistico e popolare; gli usi e costumi locali, le istituzioni culturali, le accademie, gli istituti e musei aventi carattere provinciale e le biblioteche; le manifestazioni e le attività artistiche, culturali ed educative locali; la toponomastica. << Torna al programma
